Great start, @robbertprins ! Would definitely like to see this game completed.
Thank you @dw817. Yes I intend to finish this. I actually just bought a "Gameforce Chi" handheld (have not started it up yet) to play Pico-8 games on it and I want to see my own game on it too. :)
Thanks JackJack, I agree it is nice to race for positions. I tried that in a previous game but found it more difficult to balance gameplay. A steady stream of opponents as in typical arcade games is easier in this respect. However I think I will have another go at this. Make it more like a simulation. ;)
On another note, I tried the web version of my game on Android, it seems to have a problem with playing sounds quickly after each other, introducing crackling and noise. For the engine sound, it actually plays a note every frame. I may have to look into a different method for this, if possible.
P.S. I just read other posts mentioning crackly sound on Android, so maybe it is a more general issue.
fun racer!
the game would deserve moving to 30fps (change _update to _update60)
I found the sliding a bit odd - it pushes the bike inside the curve (instead of outside).
It makes exiting the turn very difficult to control imho.
Suggest to also add more props to make the lap slighty more interesting with "racing" markers (like turn indicators or such, see Super Hang On!)
Thanks Freds72! I have considered moving to 60 fps afer I learned about this possibility and may do so at a later stage.
The sliding/drifting has the effect of increasing the steering response. So the player can more easily steer left or right, although it can work against them as well as steering becomes more twitchy.
You are right that this can typically cause problems at the end of the corner when you are 'oversteering'. I want to look into this and reduce this negative effect, and make steering less twitchy.
More scenery elements such as turn indicators are planned and a good idea as well!
Loving this racing game! Congrats it really has the feel of super hang-on. Imo the control is spot on with how these old bike games used to play.
Looking forward to a season being implemented!
My only suggestion is to get more roadside objects (and different things like rocks, cactus etc)
Cheers!
Thanks Picog8t, I was just working on a cactus as I read your post! Rocks on the side of the road is a good idea. I now have three themes, 'desert', 'circuit', and 'night forest', but still more work is needed to make actual tracks with them.
What a coincidence!
The themed race settings sounds great. I don’t know if you have it planned headlights on all the bikes would look great, i’m not sure if the pico8 has transparency or colour shadow feature to use for this?
Looking forward to the next update!
Ready to travel through time, @robbertprins ? Accelerate without turning. Just keep accelerating, for about a minute. Eventually your cycle will suddenly warp to the left and everything will start to go in reverse millions of miles per hour ! :)
@dw817 The time travel is probably because there is as yet not a limit to how far you can go to the left and the right, away from the road. So yes I have to add that. Thank you for mentioning it!
@dw817 can you stop spreading solutions that don’t exist in all posts?
Something like headlights are perfectly possible with what we’ve got.
Actually @freds72, I need to make a new post for that. Don't want to put it here. And since Zep has already selected and made use of many of my ideas in the past to incorporate in Pico-8, I just need to flesh this one out better.
It's a bit rough as it is. Needs some image illustrations. And example animations. Something new I wanted to work on. We'll get there. :)
