Be a dragon! Lay waste to your foes with your claws, bite, and fire breath! Gather gold and bring it back to your lair to grow in power! Bask in the adoration of your kobold followers! (Also you're a circle for some reason. This is Dragondot 3, you should be used to that by now.)

An action-adventure game full of secrets to find and new abilities to gain, drawing inspiration from the Legend of Zelda series among others. Map exploration, skills gained, and hoard stockpiled are all saved persistently, so you can continue your adventure across multiple sessions. Featuring over twenty different types of creatures to encounter, over twenty different skills to acquire (some with multiple upgrade levels), over a hundred map screens to explore (not even counting the dungeons, tunnels, and secret caves!) -- all packed into a single cozy little pico-8 cartridge.

You can get standalone executable versions plus a nice map of the overworld over at https://nmccoy.itch.io/dragondot-3.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!
thank you for making this video game!!

I still can't find how to access the last square on the map (Row 1, Column 2).
I'd like to see the ending, but I can't find a way to access that last square on the map.
I'm so close yet so far from completing the game, and it feels super unsatisfying. :(

@Sosasees in order to get to that room you need to go to the square at Row 2, Column 2 and fire breath the wall at north right in the middle, kinda sucks since it´s only a kobold :l but i hope i could help (note: it might also work with claws and bites)

I really like the feel of progression in this game, and the satisfaction of defeating the bosses, despite their strength over you at the start, and the completion of the last upgrade, finishing with such power that none of the bosses would be able to stand against.

I like how you traded graphical theme for making a game larger and more involved. I appreciate this choice as the game feels huge and fun. It has just enough 'look' to suggest what you're going for.

noooooo! I killed a kobold!

How do you get 1 map tile to be one screen? I am making a game and found that a very clever thing to do.

Basically, I'm not using the built-in map features, just looking at the map tile number for the screen's coordinates, then at the pixel data of the corresponding sprite, and then building a map for the current screen based on the pixels. The biome number for each screen (setting the palette) is encoded in part of the spritesheet set aside for this purpose, in a similar way.

Great game, I still have yet to find out how to beat it tho.

How do you get to the area at the bottom center of the map? I can't seem to figure it out.

Nevermind! I figured it out on my own. What a great game!

I've beaten all six bosses (I assume there's only six) but I haven't bought every skill. Is there a way to finish the game that I missed, or will I have to grind to buy those last few skills?

@MustacheEggman There's no explicit ending/credits screen, go ahead and consider yourself victorious after beating all the bosses if that works for you :) 🏆

Great game i liked it! I remember cinder tree being in dragondot 2 as an extremely unfair boss. And i have a question, how to get the second ball

Here is my stuff
Edit: oh wait cinder tree still exists
Edit2: ok i found the upgrade

@NMcCoy how do you get that shadow effect? I tried digging through the code but it didn't make any sense.

Determine the ground tiles that the shadow falls on, then draw the shadow sprite masked onto each of them tinted to that tile's shadow color.

I found a... beach? With an island that doesn't go anywhere. Is there any point to that screen or is it just a beach to hang out on?

Beside that, I've apparently 100%ed the bosses. I haven't got all the upgrades, but at this point it's just grind, right?
I remember DragonDot 1 way back when. This made me nostalgic.

The idea was that it was kind of a mesa looking out over the grassy fields, with a sun in the sky, as just kind of an easter egg. It is possible to land on the "sun" for technical reasons.

It's technically and tastefully excellent.
I really enjoyed it!

Sorry, but how much content does this game has? I already beat 4 bosses but shoulnd't I be missing one?

In the lair there's yellow/dark blue orbs in the upper left corresponding to the number of bosses you've beaten.

Oh ok, thank you. It seems I missing one. So far I've killed:

  • the ghost in the desert
  • the tree in the black-forest/swamp
  • the jumping fire-man in the volcano
  • the reflective clawer in the initial meadow (close to your cave)

Any idea where is the one I can't find?

EDIT: Ok I after going around the world for like 3 hours I finally found it!

It was in the swamp, the giant ball that increases phisical attack

can't find two of the bosses (top dot in lair and middle dot), also how to access bottom center-left spots?

help please it won't let me play, I get a strange thing with text and I don't know what to do tell me please.

Could you please share a screenshot of the "strange thing with text"?

I get this error sometimes when coming out of the den and have to restart. I also noticed that the ability to jump over water is now limited to a double jump.

Jumping off of water was a bug that I've fixed in the most recent patch. I'll look into the error message, thanks for the report! If there's anything in particular you were doing immediately before returning to the lair that causes that message to happen, please let me know; I'm having a hard time reproducing it.

Edit: found the trigger, it's from entering the lair with a fully charged shot. Not fully sure why the bug happens but I can keep it from happening at least.

More of a bigger lexaloffle problem, but I have this favourited and it's not in my cart list.

@CrownDeluxe Favorites are instanced between app and forum

@CrownDeluxe your favorites are separate between the pico-8 console and the lexaloffle bbs, because there is no lexaloffle account integration in the pico-8 console.

¿what happened to dragondot and dragondot 2?

through a quick search for dragondot i found 2 games※ — dragondot and dragondot 2 — but i don't know if they are knock-offs, or if dragondot 3 is a knock-off of dragondot and/or dragondot 2.

※i didn't find the games, but game pages where the games would have been playable if web browsers still supported adobe flash

@Sosasees and @VgBlade

I only play and look at carts through the browser BBS, since I haven't yet bought Pico-8. My problem is that the browser favorite feature that works fine with all my other favorites (I heart them and they show up when I go to "Favourite Carts" under my account), isn't with this specific one, though I'd love to have it saved with all the others.

@CrownDeluxe this is odd.
i favorited this cartridge for a moment, just to test if it would go in my favorites list — it doesn't, every other favorite cart does.

this looks like an issue with only this cart.
