Best played in fullscreen or with a controller

Welcome to Peak Of Empires v1.0!

How To Play

  • Mouse Or Arrow Keys to Move Pointer
  • Left Mouse Button or X to Choose Units
  • Right Mouse Button Or C to Send Units
  • ESDF or screen edges to Move Camera

Click units or buildings to view their stats and actions. Keep an eye on your resources, which are wood, food, stone, gold and housing. Make sure to build enough houses and send your workers to work! Once you've given them a task they will try to keep doing it until there is nothing in their vicinity left to interact with.

Whenever the game spots a "lazy" worker it will offer you to select that worker with a button next to your minimap.

Although the game does support controllers it is best played with the mouse.

How to beat

Make sure to get rid of all the enemies units on the map. Once you've done that you've beaten that scenario and can advance to the next one.
More about the game

This is a small bite-sized Age Of Empires demake with 5 scenarios to beat.

The idea came from this post on the PICO-8 forum, and I'm happy that oNek agreed to collaborate on this game.

Really well done! It took me a while to figure out that I could right click stuff after selected a worker to get the worker to acquire resources. Once I understood that the first stage was smooth sailing. I'll see how powerful I can make my civilizations in the coming stages.

It's like playing a pocket version of the real thing! Feels like a full game. The right click wasn't obvious straight away, had to check comments. I found the scrolling edge a little thin. Would player 2 arrows for the camera be possible without losing mouse control?
I really enjoyed this game! Cheers!

Thank you very much for the feedback! I added some in-game instructions, thank you for pointing that out.
I'm excited to see what civilizations you can come up with, don't hesitate to share screenshots <3
The scrolling is sadly a browser issue, it is much more enjoyable in-engine. But the idea with P2 controls sounds neat, I'll try that. I will also eventually share an executable once the first round of feedback is incorporated.

impressive feat!

minor gripes:

  • unit selection is a bit unclear
  • cannot be played on mobile (replace right click by long press and should be ok?)

@taxicomics BBS now supports mouse lock

I just pushed another update, incorporating @skipperd 's suggestion to use player 2 controls for the camera movement. Works great!

@freds72 Thank you very much!
I once had better unit selection based on proximity, but it used too much power.
Might revisit that though, thanks for the feedback.
I did not want touch controls, the mobile players can use their controllers and I hope the others use their mouse. But the suggestion is good, maybe I'll try that and see how it plays. I do wonder how they would scroll the map though.

Thanks for the update @taxicomics !
My peasants can't wait for the expansion!

@skipperd Thank you for sharing, that looks great! Teeny tiny bit of an overkill for that scenario, but I love it :D

And to whoever reported the bug with the camera controls in the main menu and then deleted their post:
Thank you for reporting on it! It is now fixed

So I was playing the second scenario and the game crashed like this when I was moving one of my knights.

Otherwise, it looks and plays really good. Maybe some of those building icons are a bit too small, so it's kinda hard to hit them with a controller sometimes. Mouse feels a lot better, provided you've got the desktop version of Pico-8 system, cause webplayer will definitely mess up those mouse clicks :)

This game definitely gets a star and a heart and I'm probably gonna show it in one of my top pico-8 games showcases, besides its own video that will be up next week.

Thank you for the bug report! I'm on it.
And thank you very much for covering the game, that is great to hear!
