Enemies

[8x8]
Bon - I can't generate ice on the neighboring tiles. There are a lot of them.

[8x8]
Eye - Move up, down, left and right. Aim well and walk on the ice.

[8x8]
Bili - It's a glowing ball that moves along the wall. It can't be defeated.

[8x8]
Pyromancer - It attacks the player directly. To defeat it, hit it with ice several times.

Remarks

This game is an action puzzle game inspired by "Solomon's Key 2"(Fire 'N Ice). "Solomon's Key 2" is one of my favorite Famicom games. "Cryomancer" is a simpler top-down game.
Also, I'm not good at English, so there may be some strange English.

Really really nice polish, this is definitely going to end up on the "featured" page. The achievements made me want to complete the game, which I'm still trying to do right now. I found one tiny mistake, the level is "complete", not "complite"

1

Found a typo of "TRUN" when I'm figuring out how "X + arrow" acts.

Edit: finally finished it - the final level is tough and spent most of the times dodging those fireballs, but made it anyways!

Great puzzle game! I like how ice "sticks" to adjacent blocks to visually show they're immovable. Also the difficulty is well balanced too.

Google翻訳:

素晴らしいパズルゲームです!氷が隣接するブロックに「くっつく」のがいいですね。動けないことが視覚的にわかります。

また、難易度もバランスが取れています。

@taxicomics
@thePixelXb_
Thanks for the great feedback!
I have uploaded a new version with corrected spelling.

2

Clever level design. Gold star.

1

The puzzles are really good. The difficulty ramps up smoothly, and new game mechanics are introduced gradually, until each level is a real head-scratcher.

This is one of the best puzzle games I've played on Pico-8. Great job!

2

Glad to read everyone's comments.

The level design is the part I put a lot of effort into, so I'm relieved that it worked out.

It's fun to see screenshots after clearing a game.
In the next update, I plan to have an achievements screen where you can see the levels you have cleared and your best records.

1

With the recent update, you can now view your best records on the achievements screen.
Here are my best records from levels 1 to 10.
Please try it.

I am about 300 far from THE SEEKER. (1893 acts)

@tmskna
All levels completed is nice!
It would be better if there were fewer 100-count levels.

I wonder if anyone has been able to get The Seeker.

great game!! I love Solomon's Key 2 (well, I know it as "Fire'n Ice") and the inspiration was clear from the start. this was a great reinterpretation in a top-down perspective. nice levels, I especially liked the last 10 ish levels -- 28 reminded me of some of the impossible-feeling levels in Solomon's Key 2. "the seeker" was fun -- I didn't expect it to be so hard!

I think I cheesed level 24:

(I didn't need to use all of the ice)

1

@pancelor
I'm glad to receive your feedback based on "Solomon's Key 2".
Congratulations on your achievement! Your record made me realize that there is room for improvement in my record as well.
Level 24 was unexpected. It's interesting so I'll leave it like this for a while. Thanks for letting me know.

Thanks for a nice puzzle game. I had some really good time playing to for the video. The undo feature is a must have. It saved me so many brain cells :)

There's a minor mistake at the game over screen. It reads "retry / slect level" instead of "retry / select level".

@lastofavari
Thank you for your feedback. I fixed the spelling mistake in the latest version.
I'm glad this game was helpful for your video. The undo feature is a must for me as well.

I am stuck at lvl6, and can't figure out if its because of some game mechanic I'm misunderstanding or what.

Game mechanics I do understand (spoilered though I'm not sure it needs to be spoilered?)

  • walk into a non-stuck ice tile: kick it in that direction
  • X + optionally up/down/left/right to either create or banish an ice tile adjacent to you in that direction
  • cannot create ice on or directly adjacent to a flame
  • if you create ice adjacent to a wall tile, it will be stuck to the wall tile so you can't kick it
  • a not-stuck ice tile can be kicked anywhere, and will not "become" stuck to whatever wall tiles it lands next to
  • some levels have ready made not-stuck ice tiles already
  • ice tiles annihilate flames on contact (both ice and flame are destroyed)

Problem I have with this and later levels:

  • There exist zero locations where one can create an ice tile without said tile being automatically stuck to an adjacent wall tile
  • There are many free ice tiles loaded with the level, but virtually none of them can get aimed at a flame
  • The only tile I can kick into a flame is the 3 wide one in the middle of the level. I can break it down to one unstuck tile, then kick it at flame A or B.. but every other tile can only move along a wall somewhere and can't get aimed at a flame. None can be moved around any corner to get them aimed at a flame either.

@suezou DAMN LIFE, DAMN RNG, DAMN EVERYTHING (not talking about gameplay)! HOW IN THE WORLD AND CHANCE DID I FOUND THIS GAME... THIS GAME, when just about 2 days earlier i was thinking about doing a Pico 8 Demake of FIRE N ICE of which i liked that i stumbled across in Nintendo Switch Online, WHEN THIS GAME IS LITERALLY BASED OF THAT GAME!!! I was pondering and all about how i should make it in pico 8, about levels, about new mechanics, and TODAY I RUN INTO THIS. I'm being completely honest: this is the most luckiest moment of my entire life, and i will never, NEVER FORGET THIS!!! Thank you so much for making this game @suezou and this is not an insult or anything alike to what you did. (I am posting this before even trying out level 3)

EDIT: First i saw the name and cover, and the theme was a little reminiscent of Fire N Ice, and i've not done it past world 1 in that game btw, but it still catched my interest and gave me wierd nostalgia. When i then saw some of the screenshots of this game, it hit me hard, especially the ice blocks and fire bons. AND THEN I READ YOUR TEXT, SEEING YOU REFERRING TO SOLOMONS KEY 2 and i get shocked, screaming like a maniac. The luck of me (a SWEDISH PERSON even) liking Fire N Ice, thinking of demaking in pico 8 and then THIS, should be impossible. I WASN'T EVEN SEARCHING FOR THE GAME, I JUST CAUGHT THIS GAME WITH MY EYE!

@HappMacDonald
Below are tips for level 6. Please take a look if you need it.

  • There is only one tile that does not touch the wall when generating ice.
    • In the initial placement, enemies and ice blocks will get in the way.
  • By generating ice blocks, you can control where the kicked ice stops.
  • There is an ice block that can hit the enemy if you kick it twice.

@Unuseable
What a wonderful encounter! I enjoyed reading your comment.
As a Fire 'N Ice fan, I look forward to your demake.

1

@suezou OK it took some doing but with those hints I was able to make it through. Danke! 😁
Also the game is very pretty and the box art is fabulous. 😳

1

Love the art, and fun gameplay!

stuck on level 28, Any tips for it?

@Greenphroggo
Tips for level 28. It may be a little difficult to understand.

  1. Use three tiles on the left to defeat one.
  2. Use three tiles on the right to defeat two.
  3. Use one tile on the right to defeat one.

@suezou
I was able to finish level 28 but now I'm at level 29, which I am able to get all but one flame and I'm really stuck, do you have any hints for it?

1

@Greenphroggo
Here's a hint for level 29.

I expect that the one flame left at the end was because there was one ice block missing.
That block is made as shown in the gif after the start.

Sorry if I am wrong.

1

This game is really fun! I played for a while and managed to get these scores.

@Vegeta8
That's a great score!
I was confident in my score but it wasn't good enough.

1

@suezou I was inspired by the scores you achieved and managed to bump down my total even further

can someone please share a clear solution for level 28 ?
