A not-entirely-canon demake of the game 'Zeewolf' by Binary Asylum.
Pilot your Zedwolf chopper across 6.5 km^2 of 3d open world environment, rescue hostages and repel the enemy force's attack!
epilepsy warning: contains strobe or flash effects
Currently there's only one level and the cart will simply replay it once it's completed.
I hope to add another one in future, but I also wanted to get something out before the end of the decade, and I have.. 19 minutes (local time) to do that!
Controls:
Z: toggle landing gear up / down
X (while landing gear is down): throttle up
X (while gear is up): fire rockets
Arrow keys: move
Shift / W / Pause menu option: minimap & mission briefing
Repairing & refuelling
Find a repair crane and land nearby - there's one in your base!
Rescuing friendlies
You can find hostages and other folks in need of help dotted around the map. Land nearby and they will hop on board! Bring anyone you find back to your base (the yellow objective marker) to complete the rescue.
But be careful - if you are shot down or run out of fuel with passengers on board, you will not be able to rescue them! (ran out of tokens to fit that in, sorry)
Non violence mode
You will still get shot at, so it's not 100% violence free, but I wanted to include a less bloodthirsty way to complete a mission. Non-violence mode is active as long as you don't kill anything, and you don't get killed. You can complete the level by rescuing all friendlies on the map.
Once something has been destroyed, you will need to complete the main objectives to finish the mission.
And Happy New Year!
edit: I completely forgot to credit Allister Brimble as the original author of the music - the track in this game is a manual conversion of his Zeewolf 1 title track.
old versions:
So cool! I never played Zeewolf but this reminds me of playing Desert Strike on Genesis as a kid. I played on mobile and got lost without the minimap but I’ll give it another shot. Cool idea with the non-violent mode.
Oh.. I totally didn't think about playing this on mobile.
I've added an option to the pause menu so people playing without the extra buttons can use the map, thanks for the feedback!
(And thanks to @freds72 for the token optimizations that let me do this quickly :) )
You were looking for tokens and you have another map?
(insert compilation of rolling eye/face palm/expletive/... emoji here)
:]
I loved gamed like this as a kid. Reminds me of Army Men: Air Attack
or could you post the code you used for it? because I only have the old version of pico 8. 😢
Hi, glad you enjoyed it!
You can download the cart by clicking 'Cart' underneath the web player window. You can see the code by clicking the code dropdown to the right of that, though it will not work without the data in the cart as well.
That said I'm not sure which old version you mean, but I know this does not run well on PocketCHIP, if at all.
Edit: you can also play the original Amiga version over here - https://archive.org/details/Zeewolf_v1.02_1994_Empire_cr_PDX (hopefully posting warez links is ok when they're hosted by archive.org!)
how did you fit all the code in since there's a limit to the tokens?
1) I used versions from around 0.1.8 - 0.1.12c, though I doubt it will run on less than 12c now.
2) The cart is CC4-BY-NC-SA licensed, so remixing and releasing it for free is fine. You can click the license link under the webplayer to find out more about that.
I will release the editor tools at some point which would make remixing much easier, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
4) Manual minification & a lot of optimization - I'd be here all day explaining so I won't go into that here, but there are other posts on the forum about those topics.
This is fun!
I don't know if there's technical reasons not to do this, but I think you could fit the entire map in the HUD if you moved some things around. There's a lot of empty space, and the little screen that shows what you're locked on to doesn't seem to have much purpose.
Dunno if you're still thinking of adding more levels, but I'd play them.
I've not had much time to work on this recently, but do plan to add that second level at some point (especially as the extra models are already in the cart)
@sliuey Sorry, I have the @ notifications turned off (and can't remember how to turn them back on). That depends on what you want to remix. If you have specific questions I will try to answer.
@Catatafish I want to remix Zedwolf if that's ok, except I don't know how.
I just love, retreating to get repairs, than come back exploding everything. SAVE THE FRIENDLIES
@Catatafish how you turn on the email notifications is you go to your profile settings, go down until you see the "Notifications" bit, and untick the box that says "Mute Email Notifications". and that should turn them back on!
Incredible Catatafish, very nice!
Has almost a bit of "Hunter" from Amiga feel to it.
