About

An ex-magical girl's familiar cat leaves home, and she sets off to find her cat.

It's my first attempt to use 16x16 sprites, and I definitely feel that a scrolling game with 16x16 on PICO-8 was probably not the smartest design, I had very little room left for the levels, of which there are only two.

But as a prototype, I had a lot of fun figuring out how to make various mechanics work -- parallax, bouncing boulders, moving platforms, jumping down from a platform and a life bar. ...and as a result I think it's got a bit more spaghetti than even my usual, but the next time I use them I'll be able to handle them better. Maybe. Hopefully.

The game should take about 3~5 min to complete. Both the combat and the platforming are kept light, the only thing a player might want to be careful is not to overuse the drill, since the drill meter on the bottom also doubles as your health.

That was fun! On my first attempt I tried using the drill a lot ... that didn't go so well. On my second attempt I only used it when absolutely necessary and mostly just charged through, which worked much better. I liked the writing!

Thanks! The ghosts always drop health items, and the boulders as well when not in the boss battle (during the boss battle it does 50% of the time), so fighting back is not always pointless. The other zombie-like enemies don't, and they will spawn infinitely so sometimes it's better to just take a hit and use the blinking time to move out of the way.

Also, colliding with the boss doesn't harm the player. I removed that collision as it leaves too little room for the player to manoeuvre otherwise.

Love the art, 16x16 has a totally different feel! Having the attack energy double as health was a cool concept. It was tricky avoiding some of the enemies, but the i-frames were very forgiving. Maybe if the drill had a slowing effect?
Nice game!

Good, @katiusza. Excellent storyline and animation. Always refreshing to see RPG elements in games that they are not normally found.

I have some suggestions regarding what has been mentioned above by others but we'll save that for another day. :)

@TrueCube4134 Yes, the boulders lose speed when they collide with the drill. I didn't add slow effect on other enemies as they die quickly enough.

And as for the drill.. I had to make a choice if I wanted to make her unable to move while using the drill, or make the drill cost something otherwise there's no reason not to have the drill on the entire level. And a drill is like a weapon that feels more natural to turn on and press on the object for a duration.. unlike say, a sword, where one swing per button input would feel natural.

this was really cute thank you!
