This was originally supposed to be an engine for animating a splash screen with as little cartridge storage as possible. As it turns out, it's not too difficult to make a good-looking smooth animation, as long as it's not too long. However, the music video for "Bad Apple" is not not too long.

In order to fit the entire animation, I had to render it at 3.75 FPS, and make it 16*16 pixels...but hey, it fits on a PICO-8 cartridge, so why not?

If any of you are interested in the splash-screen engine, I can fine-tune and release that here.

@electricgryphon actually had done their own attempt at this at a larger res, albeit the first 25 seconds and without sound: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=29241

I'm pretty unfamiliar with compression methods but maybe it'd be possible to find some sort of middle ground between the two?

@Jusiv I am aware of that one. Personally, I'd love to make some sort of lossy compression scheme like that in order to show a bit more detail (however fuzzy). I just have no idea where to start, if I still want to end up at an actual full version.

Also Gamax92 did a neat compression with rectangles and circles.

At some point I might like to take a stab at this, @JWinslow23.

There was a method I developed years ago to draw shaded chess pieces using only bytes of data. That could work here converting shade to animation.

Fun and mesmerizing to watch and the music is nothing short of incredible. Solid gold star program all the way.

@JWinslow23 is banger update music pls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
