Stay calm through the dark woods after a long day.

I made a horror game for PICO-8 for Halloween, and generally inspired by the fall. Can you make it through the woods? I recommend playing in fullscreen mode, with headphones, and in the dark!

Controls:
Arrow Keys - move
z or c - interact
x or v - (hold) stay facing the same direction while walking

You can also play it and download the source files on the game's itch.io page here, or check out the code and assets on the game's github page here!

Update: The first screen's a bit friendlier, and the I made a few other balance adjustments after seeing more testing :)

I love this - I don't love the new cart browsing system which doesn't display the description along with it. I died a few times before I worked out what to do .

I haven't completed it yet, but due to the way the torch changes direction, it doesn't feel very fair the way it snaps between positions with a gap between - giving the thing a chance to get to you when all you want to do is move around it while keeping the torch on it...

Everything deserves a chance, though ;)

Yeah, I think the light coverage when turning makes the game a little twitchy, but I like how it takes away the feeling of safety. The game's fairly short, meant to be completed in one sitting, so I'm curious to hear what you think if you come back to it!

Hey what is with that pyxel file on your Github? Does that mean there is a way to break Pico-8's map size limitation??

Man I literally can't do this. They always kill me on the diagonals, like I said. At least by the time I have to walk through the field with the one in the middle.

The .pyxel file is for pyxel edit, an external program I use to edit the sprite map. It doesn't increase pico-8's map size, it's just there for easier sprite editing for me.

The game itself has a bigger map by re-using sections of pico-8's map as a sort of super tile, so the actual game map uses repeating sections of the "map" in the cartridge.

Ah, yeah the same method I used :)

This deserves a Halloween bump.

Good bump, Enargy. Great game for upcoming Halloween.

What all are you supposed to be able to interact with? I can't seem to figure it out.

@spacekid2000 you just slowly walk to the right and make it to the next map

then spooky happens

and sometimes you use X (..or Z..?) to hack open a gate or something
