My first effort with the Pico-8. I hope you enjoy it.
update:
v1.1. I added Morning Toast's recommendation. So instead of saying "items found" or "secrets found" it says how many out of how many you've found. I also made a slight change to make ending "A" a little more obvious (but not by much) and optimized a little bit bit of the code.
I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying it. Thanks everyone! "Quack!"
Wow...this is really good for several reasons. One, the several endings is a surefire way to get me play again - missions accomplished.
This is also a great example of a RPG-like interface with the camera zone, UI and story box. Should be very flexible for other games that want that type of layout.
I played through twice just now and seeing the final stat screen made me want a "out of" stat. It says I found 2 secrets and 5 items. Is that good? Is that bad? I have no idea. Adding a "Secrets 2/5" or something like that would be an even better way to draw people back in.
Now I just need to find out how to do something with all those ducks!
This is one of those games where there's more beneath the surface. Really solid job here.
After playing through and getting the easy ending, I started digging through the code figuring out the remainder of the secrets. They're Legend of Zelda tricky, but not impossible.
What really would have brought the experience together is a few pieces of music playing while the game is going on.
I found all 3 endings but I was aiming for 4 or 5. If they exist then I must have messed up ><
I found 2 endings this morning but I couldn't find a third one and it was driving me nuts. Then Finally found it and I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe it's the timer?
Thank you for the comments, everyone. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Morning Toast, thanks for the suggestion. I'll implement that.
^Connorses Ending A must be the "tricky" one that josefnpat mentioned. Do you recall the time it took you to get through it when you found that last ending? Because I did the delightfully disturbing ending as quickly as possible (less than three minutes) and then played the game again, letting it sit and not finishing it until after 13 minutes, so that wasn't it (/might not be it anyway).
By the way, ending B has probably THE biggest surprise of a Pico game ending since The Stroll, and that one was even hinted at, yet a lot of us didn't see it coming!
Actually I beat it in 2 or 3 minutes. I think it has more to do with picking up on all the little details. There were things that I originally saw as cute jokes that were actually critical. I was gonna give an example, but, um, spoilers.
^Yeah, I'm running out of ideas. I figured it had something to do with "details". I'm going to try out something else later.
I must admit, I took a loooong look at the source to figure out the third ending, but it was still worth it.
Such a great little gem of a game.
It's almost as if these little, polished and closed (in terms of gameplay) games are PICO-8's sweet spot. Loving it more and more. I came here for the development and stayed for these wonderful games.
I really liked this! I was absorbed for quite a while trying to find ending number 3. I'm usually pretty terrible at the super-secret type stuff, though, so I don't have too much feedback.
I really liked your user interface. The small field of view played really nicely with the constant status bars. Great use of space on the map, too - the slow walk speed doesn't detract too much since the spaces are small and well-designed.
I'm not usually a vignette-game kind of guy, but i was really absorbed into figuring this one out. nice!
I found it, I found it!
Had to trawl through the code like a dork though.
