Ever wondered what being a space weapon engineer feels like?! Wonder no more and be one in Gears of Gear!!!

This isn't a game! It's a toy!! Make cool stuff happen with gears!

Controls are on the title-screen.
The different types of gears modify the behavior of the canon on the bottom half of the screen when they are connected and spinning. Having several gears of the same type does increase their effect.
You can access the trunk by pressing Z at the top of the screen.

This is about 40% of what I originally intended to do for p8jam2. But then life and bad organization happened and I had to improvise to get something somewhat finished.
I wanted to make a shmup and I'm still going to do it (probably) so consider this as a demo or a prototype or something!

Secret feature: press z, x, left and right at the same time (or just tab) and the current gear set will be replace by a randomly generated one!

Have fun!

edit: Made trunk more obvious, fixed a bug and added p8jam2 tag. :x
ecit2: fixed bugs with the random gear set generation.
edit3: just written two more sentences in the description for peeps who don't get what's happening. ;)

This is really fun and fantastic, its a great showing of the power of pico-8 as well.

This is pretty neat, very Incredible Machine kind of vibe. The only thing is that it was a complete accident that I discovered the trunk at the top of the screen. Maybe want to make that a little more obvious, or Z+X or something.

A pico8 steam factory... Really nice and smoky ;-)

Z+X+L+R works fine, but if you press Tab it says:

RUNTIME ERROR
   focus.x=curx
line 318: attempt to index global 'focus' (a nil value)
in updategrip line 318
in _update line 107

or if you press Tab while hovering over a gear, or even Z+X+L+R while carrying a gear:

RUNTIME ERROR
elseif (not trunk) and focus.t>0 and not focus.src then
line 324: attempt to index global 'focus' (a nil value)
in updategrip line 324
in _update line 107

Very nice presentation too! And all the different combinations of shooting patterns. Pretty cool!

I realy love this kind of toy. It remind me of "Bureau of Steam Engineering" by Zachtronics. I didn't realy get the relation between the gear factory and the shooting pattern, but it's an interesting idea.

neat toy - not sure what's going on, but I like the references!

Sweet concept, impressive graphics! This was one of the carts I waited the most, seeing the gifs you posted on Twitter during the jam. ;)

But there's something that frustrated me a lot at my first try : not being able to know which kind of gear I could connect to which one. When I started the toy, I dragged a gear that couldn't connect to anything, and I spent two minutes struggling with the controls to do things but I wasn't able to connect anything right .__.

Interesting toy! I included it in my Pico-8 Jam #2 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :)
