This is my first game of sorts. I made it for my preschooler and as a way for me to learn some P8 basics. There's not much to it. Presents release food, then collect all the food until you get them all. There's no end, per se, the collection goal just keeps going up. If this ends up being something she enjoys, I'll add things to it but if nothing else this is a great reference for my future projects.
And thanks to everyone here on the forums...I learned a lot about some the nuances of Lua and it came in handy.
I used the animation function from here:

I copied food sprites from here:

I couldn't find the thread where I got the collision function but thank you!
Once nice experience I had with this program was the refactoring. My first dive into this game was just hacking through new commands and learning. Once I got that to a workable state, I refactored it in about 2 hours to be pretty nicely laid out, IMHO. Still learning where to gain efficiencies but hey, it's a start.
Well it seems basic on the first play but I think the game have a good potential even for an adult if you try to play it without getting unwanted fruits. This way fruits become obstacles and later, the game become very strategic. You should try to :
- add 3x lives ( one life lost per unwanted fruit )
- +1 life when you clean a level
edit : If you have no time for this, I would be happy to try to builda version of this game :)
I did make a few adjustments after I posted...like making the fruit count random for each fruit per level. I thought that even for my kid there's no reason to keep them all the same...better for her number learning to have different ones anyway.
I like your ideas...there probably is more "game" here than I give it credit for. When I was playtesting I too kind of treated it as a game of efficiency, like not to travel across the screen to get a fruit when a present was right next to me...shortest path kind of thing.
But for now I don't really plan on adding any more to the game until I see how my kid reacts to it. She might love it or not care. I'm waiting to show her it until my PocketCHIP comes. I think the idea of playing on that will motivate her more to check it out...but we'll see, 4-year-olds are fickle ;P
So if you want to take it and expand it, feel free. It'd be cool to see how someone builds on top of what's there. Have at it, man...just post and share what you come up with :)
Oh...and BTW, just saw that you made the Hug Arena game...totally awesome! Been playing it a lot recently. Love the mechanics and great execution. I've been looking at it to see how you do certain things so I can incorporate them in my next game.
This could easily be made into a version of Food Fight!
Ha, that would be pretty nifty. I'm waiting for my PocketCHIP to arrive so my kid can play it.
If anyone wants to convert this into a food fight game, have at it.
haha this is cute. I've been thinking of making a game for my kid too :)
