◆VIOLET
v1.3 Game by lily.kensa
Feedback is welcome.
Thank you.
Notice
I know the controls are a little bit slippery, that's because of the snow.
(What? TOO slippery? Maybe I have to fix it.)
Credits
The base is from 'Surnned' by @Atjowt, the animation also refers to this.
The title screen refers to 'To a Starling' by @Peteksi.
The physics of dash, sprites and the map styling refer to 'Celeste' by @noel.
The particle effect refers to 'Slimey, Jump!' by @CarlosPedroso.
Special thanks to @phil and @dw817 for giving tips and finding bugs.
Cheat
If you can remind me of some mistakes, I would be very grateful.
Very neat little platformer! Really enjoyed the mechanics, and the levels were fairly well designed. Definitely faster-paced than most celestelikes I've played, but I think it works alright.
I do think the physics felt a bit too slippery though. I repeatedly made a jump but then continued moving into spikes, and the "slide" move is a bit too easy to trigger accidentally. If anything, a "stop" move would have been much more useful lmao
That's really my main complaint though, this is very well done :D
this is nice! as taco said, the controls feel slippery
my time:
Hoorah! The final version has been released! Good polish, sound, animation, effects but still extremely tough. I can only get 4/8 mushrooms.
I also found the secret area (at the end). Its great when games just throw in a little bit more. I think it shows how much the developer cares about the players.
One minor item: Every mushroom gives 1,000 points but there is no score in this game. Instead when collecting a mushroom you could give a count of how many you've collected so far e.g 1/8
Well done. Great game.
After an entire year...
My PB was finally shattered.
Current PB: 48.8500 (13.7 with secrets)
Got 5 mushrooms on my first attempt. On the second:
I had some trouble on the first run because I missed the mushroom next to the hint explaining that you can dash through spikes. Still a good, smooth game.
@phil:
Thank you, I couldn't have got there without help, and that was just enough hint to give.
Nice game i like the celeste feel, Its really slipery tho lol.
I also got a good any% run, ggs
@Catastrophic Cal Have you found a skip/glitch or is it just pixel-perfect running?
@Knack there might be a secret ;) btw i got a new time edit: i didnt realize there was text on my screen when i posted lol.
PB!
also: help for those who don't understand how people get those fast times:
Hi @lily.kensa:
Your Tutorial is appearing half-off the screen to the right NOT in Pico-8 version 0.2.4b but the new online version of 0.2.4c.
Try it above.
I like this little celeste thing, my only complaints are slippery controls.
But otherwise a good game
gonna go for 100%
Just finished the game,
it was so enjoyable.
Thank for your hard work.
New strategy brought me to this. I think I can shave off about two seconds but this will take some time.
I shaved off more than expected. Again, with some practice next milestone I'm hoping to achieve is about 45 sec. I don't think I'll ever manage to make it past 40 though.
sub 40 is definitely possible, maybe even lower (sub 35 perhaps)
@Hexit45 - wow! congrats actually, good job, my best score is 45.8667 - I do understand that there are couple of places which, with some practices will help me to go down to around 43 - sub 40 is still something I can not imagine (your result is incredibly impressive as well)
@shabunc, Yeah there are actually quite a few rooms that could be optimized, the trick that I followed is to just try to get in alot of dashes and probably try to experiment with a few rooms.
Still though, the time of 45 seconds is still an amazing feat that you have accomplished!
@Hexit45 - first of all, congrats! You are pushing the boundaries of what's possible and you are my source of inspiration )
My best so far is 40.5333 and now yep, I see what can be done to come down to say, 38.5.
What you did is still unimaginable to me )
I guess I'll start to record how I'm speedrunning so may be it give a hint what can be improved.
I also found that in some cases one can break through throw ice downwards but I'm not using this techniques since it's a) unreliable b) it feels like it belongs to the out-of-boundaries and in that case why not just break through throw the very first ceiling.
Now I do believe in sub'36 but with my mediocre skill it will take enormous amount of effort.
But it's getting more fun.
I'm quite stubbornly not involving any new trick to my technique but rather trying to hone my precision.
Thanks lily.kensa!
I've loved jamming this. I've bought myself an All-Button-Controller (or ABC) for jamming fighting games on console and have been using this game to re-teach a new layout. I've really loved playing this. I see the Any% runs. But Where do I look for the full mushroom playthroughs? I know I'm not in the running I just wanna see what people are doing. Thanks for making such a fun game to jam to!
Really fun precision platformer. I love the level design in this and everything feels very polished. I liked the snow and the little torii gates, give the game a cool feel (pun intended)
Up to this point in time I need to come up with new strategy or I'll hit the wall pretty soon.
@2dere I'm planning to switch to 100% when I'll realise that it's impossible to me improve anything for any%. Actually, we can also create as title at speedrun.com
