@inphanta Hey, thanks so much!
A few things:

  1. The mobile version's control scheme sounds like it's better suited to your tastes - you press one action button to jump, and hit left/right while holding the other action button to rotate.
  2. Yes, there is definitely some more you haven't found, although admittedly the puzzles involved might not be very well-suited to YouTube content (they're very paper and pencil-oriented). There's a special door you didn't seem to notice in the artifact chamber.
  3. The constellation room can actually be completed without using any information from other screens.

  1. Glad you liked the fake reboot! The screen there is all recreated by hand (instead of actually rebooting the cart in some way). But yeah, there was no way I was passing up the chance to throw that in the game :P

1

Very nice work. Just can't figure out how

to get the heart though. I've opened the cart in the PICO-8 application (which I used for the first time), looked at the map, but still have no clue. Any hints would be appreciated or, if anyone is willing to outright tell me how it's done, that'll be even better.

@probationary_period Thank you!

Did you translate the text yet?

@Jusiv Ah finally, thank you.

For some reason I had figured the symbols were just the sprites used and never gave it a second thought. By the way, was there any clue in the game about the heart? I only found out because of the comments here.

@probationary_period Nice!

And nope, there's no clue for it. It's just very much in the spirit of FEZ to hide extra stuff for people who dig through the files, so that's exactly what I did.

Given that moon translates to lua, I thought moon view might mean check the code.

1

Amazing little game.
Thx for making!

This was a real nod to Fez and it definitely gave me a bit of trouble.

I found the game on itch.io and didn't know there was open code until I found this page, so I really enjoyed searching in the spirit of Fez. I think I missed the point of the constellation message, though.

@roobot0 Hey, thanks for playing! Glad you liked it!

If you're referring to the text you translate in the constellation room, that one's mostly for world flavor. Not all of the text in FEZ has explicit purpose, either.
That said, that message can clue players into certain letters depending in the order they go through the language, and it technically acts as a clue towards that room's gimmick if they were somehow still stumped on it.

i beat the game but i still cant make out zip of the secret language.

@Thunder919113
Ok, from what you've said so far you've deduced:

"Butterflies" and "End", which should be a good start. Yes, other pieces of text use other characters, but all text in the game is relevant to the room you find it in so it's possible to deduce what those characters mean. No piece of text in the game is just arbitrary.

Now, there are some quirks with the language.

Most significantly, it consists of 6 characters rotated in 4 ways, leading to 24 characters. However, English has a full 26 characters, so take that as you will.
There also may be some subtleties to how the language is read that have tripped you up.

Hope that helps!

Hoo boy. And I thought 3D was difficult. This is a nightmare - at least to me. Seems like everyone else picked it up quite rapidly and is having a ball. Well that's good then.

But it's very tricky to get my bearings in here. Reminds me strongly of BRANDISH.

https://youtu.be/QxtmxivtsN0?t=237

In Brandish, every time you turn left or right the whole screen literally turns 90 degrees.

@dw817
Well, different things click differently for different people. FUZ is technically 3D, it's just played from 4 specific camera angles. I consider FUZ's system quite faithful to that of FEZ, its basis, given the limitations of PICO-8.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfpKTclOnfI

Brandish seems agonizing to watch due to the lack of a rotation effect, geez. I find it quite tricky to track and process that game's rotations visually, especially with how far the player's screen position tends to jump around.

Watching the video, @Jusiv. Yep, that would still be hard for me to understand. There was another game for the NES that did this too. Tower of ... Castelian !

I had great trouble playing this too. So it's not your game, it's the way my brain works or the lack thereof. Just can't wrap my head around 3D or related.

https://youtu.be/I-Z5jBinw_Y?t=18

I remember playing Dark Cloud for the PS2 and not figuring out how to exit the first dungeon room until hours later. For some reason I didn't even see the topview of the map until Chris pointed it out to me. I can be blind like that. :)

When I write 3D stuff if you check you'll see it's not at all. I just change the speed and brightness of images until they "look" 3D. Same with my snow and star routines. I never use a Z coordinate with X & Y as I really don't understand how it works.

This limitation does make me strong and knowledgeable about programming 2D code though and in playing games that are. Because of this my greatest strength is in writing 2D databases from the ground up for businesses and places I've worked.

2

yo i just decoded a language to get a pink end screen instead of a black one

worth it lmao

I can't get the 8th Block bit or whatever it is called

@Noobie I'm assuming you're referring to the one in the room with the grid in the sky? Because the last cube bit there can't be jumped to. You'll have to delve into more of the puzzle aspects of the game to reach it.

Hint: That room provides you with everything you need to reach it.

type help for help

run_

is there a way to get 5 cubes? i got the ending where you have 3 anti cubes, 1 regular cube, a fez hat, and that artifact thing. and i see that somebody got the same ending however i saw that there were hearts around them. is there something i need to find to unlock the ending with the hearts? because i didnt see any hearts in my ending

@Andrew You are correct in assuming you missed something, but it's very much an extra easter egg. It's so hidden you need to actually own PICO-8 to find it.

it seems imposible to get the last one

@darrionxw It is impossible to jump to it normally, you are correct. There is a way to reach it but you'll have to think in a much more puzzle-y way.

1

NOICE. fez is also one of my favorite games.

1

I read that you need pico-8 to solve the heart puzzle, so I cheated and found the solution in the source code. I loved solving the rest of the puzzles, though!

1

@Scrubz Glad you enjoyed it! And I mean hey, it's not the puzzle I intended but if you're willing to dig through the source code to track that down from scratch I'd say that's a worthy achievement in its own right :P

1

I've just given a quick look but holy what, how did you manage to do that? Gladly it is made with PICO-8, it will be a pleasure to study this!

1

Beautiful game! Really enjoyed playing it.

1

Ok, I've played through the game, it's so well made! I've played Fez years ago, and this game is just like it for what I can remember. You managed to create the 3D effect while rotating quite well, I was totally tricked by it, and, even though is a small game, it is like a little fez adventure.

I've also read this: http://www.jusiv.me/blog/fuz-reflections/
Such a nice read! Thank you for explaining in details all the process, it was also a pleasure to read with lot of gifs.

And just so you know, I think the music are pretty cool and I will use this as a reference because I like this style!

How do I do the puzzle, I know the hint, but I don't get it lol

@ Agent Tom
There's a certain sequence of actions you'll need to perform, and there are two important things in the environment that together tell you what that is.

I need help trying to get all of the bits because I have only 7 of them and I can’t figure out the puzzle with the constellations.

@MaximumTough Try to figure out:

what makes the constellation take what shape, and see if you can find anything related to those shapes in the room.

@Jusiv I still can’t get it. :/

Lol, he made the impossible puzzle!

Ye! I did it! And I only watched, like, a little bit of a walk-through.

That Anti Cube option in the pause menu is messed up. This is Nintendo level secrets right now.
(You don't need Pico 8 to get the heart ending!)

@Jerry_Boy Congrats!

While you don't technically need PICO-8 to discover how to get it, it does give you a way to solve it without having to ever look through the game's code.

Also, please hide puzzle spoilers with hidden tags! You can edit your message to put the tags around it like this:

[hidden]This text will be hidden.[/hidden]

@Jerry_Boy Thanks for editing it! But sorry, I should have been more clear: while it's good to hide the ending screen, the Anti-Cube comment was more what I was referring to, since

clueing people in to that being a solution at all is revealing.

1

Absolutely amazing stuff! Was a joy to decode all the puzzles.

Although I only got the heart after having read @TheV360 's comment.

2

I am a big fan of the original game FEZ. The demake is really awesome. Love it!

1

Saw the og one,Requires you to use the new 3d feature turning the world. This is a great demake!

1

nice

Why when i try going through the warpgate it just shows this

And it stays like that

@clouddown i may be 3 years too late but "run" is the command you use in the pico-8 command line to start the currently loaded cartridge

I found the third cube while pausing in the correct room, trying to think of words that end with 'use'. It took me a whole minute to notice...

Cool, cool, fun, fun, got the

fez and heart
10/10, very good

is the text what I use to solve the "star" room?

how the heck could I mod the levels

I'm confused

polytron still exists! how when there not even making games anymore?
I think :I

So I jumped back into this game and beat it again. But I didn't realize until... hold on. This is a major spoiler, so I'm gonna put it all in a hidden tag.

So I was reading the comments and discovered that there's something I didn't get, that it can only be found by reading the code of the game. Apparently there's a second hidden item beyond the fez that adds hearts around the end screen.

Now, I know code, I've made a few games in the past, but not on Pico8. But I figured, how hard could it be?

Apparently, very.

I can't find where the map is defined besides some lines of code, and if that's it, that is not intuitive. I found the line that's spoken and the numerical value of the object, but not where it's hidden in the game, on which screen, and where. I'm at a loss here.

I know it's a bit late, but any help would be appreciated.

2

Okay, as it has been a while, I'm going to spoil the game for those who are just discovering this and are lost. But as mentioned before, I haven't 100%ed the game, so maybe someone else can finish this guide.

I'm going to try to spoil things in stages, though, so you can continue to find stuff on your own if you just need a little help.

SPOILER 1: I can't get the piece on the star room.

Do you see how whenever you move or rotate that the stars show a pattern, and that each pattern is different? Do you see the stone pillars? Do you see any relation to the shapes you see in the stars in the stone pillar?

No, sorry, I still don't get it.
That's okay. Here it is. The symbols on the stone pillar are the same, just rotated on their side. So you have to turn your head sideways to read the stone pillar. Then just recreate the movements on the pillar that the stars were taring you to do.

Seriously, just spell it out for me.
In the star room press X, X, up, left, right, Z

SPOILER 2: What's with the flashing tuning fork pillar thing?

Look at the pattern of which one is flashing, and repeat that pattern with left and right spins.

Seriously, just spell it out for me.
Press Z, Z, X, Z, X, X on the screen with the little tuning fork thing.

SPOILER 3: The secret of the code...

You've found one anti-cubes in the tuning fork area and the sealed door looks like it need 3 of them, so where are the other two? Well to figure that out you're going to need to decode the secret language. On some rock walls there are strange squares. These squares are a substitution cypher, where each symbol is a letter in the English alphabet. I recommend you take a piece of paper, write the alphabet on it with enough space to write a little square, and start filling out the letters as you learn them.

There are many clues around of words you know that can get you started.

No, sorry, I still don't get it.
In the very second screen there's a pillar with a bunch of BUTTERFLIES flying around it. Get it? Using that and context clues of the area you're in can give you hints to building your understanding of the entire code.

Ok, I get that one, but I'm struggling with the rest.
Well, there are similar symbols on the very first screen, the one where the WARP GATE is broken. And there's others on the nexus screen that has 4 doors in it. In fact it's the same message, repeated, and it's surrounding a very nice MOON VIEW. (This one illustrates that the U and V are the same symbol, mostly because of the limitations of the code chosen, but it's fine.)

The one on the screen where the stars are teaching you the hints to the previous problem is a little more difficult, but it's just a simple phrase that can help you decode the alphabet.

...Which is?
I wanted to give you a chance to figure it out yourself. The phrase reads top to bottom, right to left, and says "THE SKIES OBSERVE US TOO". This gives you enough of the alphabet to tackle the really big one in the last room.

...Which is?
ENTER THE PAUSE MENU

SPOILER 3: The last...

...Anti-Cube. Sorry, gotta be careful what's outside and inside the spoiler tags here.

So you can't find the last anticube? Notice anything else on the BUTTERFLIES screen?

No, sorry, I still don't get it.
That's okay. On the BUTTERFLIES screen, there's another stone pillar with symbols very much in the stars screen. Interpret it the same way for the win!

Seriously, just spell it out for me.
On the BUTTERFLIES screen press Z, up, Z, right, down, X.

Hey, the game crashed

Don't close the game. Just wait a sec. It's just a little metahumor.

That's it?

With this you should have everything you need to beat the game with the fez. However, there's another hidden item, a heart as I understand it, but it requires you digging into the code of the game, and I just can't figure it out myself, so if anyone has any hints how to decode the code of the game and find the heart, please, clue me in.

I hope this helps!

Okay, I am officially obsessed. I'm going to end this with a plea from help from everyone who's found the answer.
I think I"m on the right track. Hopefully someone can give me what I'm missing.

This is the 4 pages of Fuz's sprite data, laid out.

If I understand correctly, the clue is here (Edit it's not). I'm staring at it. Somewhere in here there should be a code, in the games coded language, that tells you what to do on the moon view screen to make the heart appear, but I just do not see it.

Am I looking in the wrong place, or am I just oblivious?

Edit: I'm looking in the wrong place. But what I didn't know was the map data can be scrolled out and moved around ei the middle mouse button.
