How to Play
Cherry Bomb is a basic arcade Shoot 'em up game (Shmup) reminiscent of Space Invaders or Galaga. Pilot your red spaceship to blast your way through 9 waves of attacking aliens. Use the following controls:
- Arrow keys - Move the ship
- (X) - Shoot
- (O) - Bomb (Depletes your 🍒. See below)
Shoot the enemies to destroy them. Enemies will attack you. Destroy or avoid all enemies in a wave to proceed to the next wave. There are 9 waves in the game. If you get hit you will lose a ❤️. If you lose all ❤️ you lose the game.
Pickups
Occasionally, defeated enemies will drop a 🍒 pickup. Collect them to increase the strength of your Bomb. Triggering the Bomb will deplete your 🍒. You cannot use the Bomb if you have no 🍒.
If you collect 10 🍒 you will restore a ❤️. If you already have 4❤️ you will get points instead. After collecting 10 🍒 your stock will always reset.
Scoring
Here are ways to score in the game:
- Shooting down enemies will give you points. More dangerous enemies will give more points
- Shooting down an attacking enemy will double the points you get
- Collecting 10🍒 with 4❤️ will give you points
- Destroying enemy bullets with the Bomb will give you points
The game will keep your highest score. Post your best results in the comments below!
Learn How to Make This Game!
Cherry Bomb was created as part of a tutorial series about how to make your own game from scratch. If you also want to make a game like this check out this thread!
Credits
This game was written and designed by Krystian Majewski, an Independent Developer and the host of the Lazy Devs Academy video channel.
The music was composed by Sebastian Haßler, a music composer for film, TV and videogames.
This series is just awesome!
Thanks SO MUCH for such a great tutorial - if your YouTube series doesn't inspire folk to have a play and make a game, then I don't know what will :-)
Keep up the great work.
All the best,
Paul
PS: the PICO-8 IDE reminds me very much of STOS on the Atari ST back in the day. All you need in one neat package. It really is a great bit of software, with an even greater community behind it. Long live indie developers!
62000, I guess that's my highest score.
Anyways, nice short shmup. Had I knew using bomb will reduce my bonus, I won't use it.
Oh well, did complete the game nonetheless :D.
Best Tutorial - has inspired me a lot.
Great short game and fun.
Just gave the final release a go..
77100 - woah -- I got a ridiculously lucky string of cherries.. I think 2x 5000 in one level .. hah.
Thank you for the tutorial!!!
My highscore is 58500 and I know it is bad haha
The game is super fun!
My first-time score is 65100, though I had seen the tutorials so I already knew what to expect from the enemies. Nice shmup, if a little short, though its short length was probably in service of the tutorial (which was a joy to watch btw).
Thanks for your game. I've died in the last stage of this bullet hell insanity, but I love the graphics and sprite animations. The score is 51200.
great game! cute and pretty easy, but things got a lot more interesting when I started playing for a high score
edit: my best is now 110400 !
Beat the last wave with a high score of 66600, which I'm pretty sure is the most awesome possible score even if it's not the highest
I find it hard to differenciate (is that how its written) between an enemy bullet and a cherry, but it might just be me. Good game! P.S. I've been watchin' some of your tutorials lately, you make amazing content!
This game has a speedrun leaderboard now, in case anyone's interested in going for speedy playthroughs rather than a high score:

Just finished lesson #10 of this series. Thank you for this! I never thought I'd be making a game.
I have completed the tenth lesson in this series. I'm grateful that you provided this. I had no idea that I would be creating a game retro bowl.
