New Version 1.1.1:
Oops I introduced a bug with previous version. Fixed!
Version 1.1:
As I was asked several times, I added options to allow manual fire and non inverted Y axis.
I also slightly lowered the laser sound as it was a bit annoying (It is still but lower :D)
I finally found the time to finish my shooter.
Here is Hyperspace, a 3D shooter with endless enemy waves. Try to beat your score during your last stand! Dodge through asteroids, resist enemy waves and defeat the bosses.
The barrel roll (with X) allows you to be untouchable for a short period of time.
The time is accelerating continuously so kill all enemies the fastest possible to get the best score.
I struggled a lot with token limit and I couldnt implement all i wanted. The code is messy as hell as I had to hardcode everything to save tokens
More sfx/music can still be added if I find some more tokens.
Looking forward to seeing your feelings about the game! And dont hesitate to share your highscores!
PS: The webplayer may have some slowdowns from time to time, the game in pico 8 client should run at a stable 30fps
I saw this on twitter a few days ago, awesome job! It makes my 3D demo look like "hello world" :)
Wow that rocks! Awesome!
(BTW as you asked it today, this runs terribly smoothly on my home PC.)
I'm surprised by how well this runs in the browser given the quality of the 3D engine.
Will this be a full game at some point?
Thanks everyone!
Yes it is gonna be a full game (very soon)
I'm struggling with token limit atm!
Good job making this game a reality. Hopefully Pico-8 0.1.4 will alleviate some of your token woes.
yay! the new changes are great! much more playable now!
really enjoy the transition from the game over explosion to starting again.
This is incredible on so many levels. Though, if I were allowed one nitpick, I'd rather have an option to choose between continuous fire and single shots instead of continuous fire and literal always firing - no game had that ever.
I dont think single shot laser would fit well with the pace of the game. Imagine how you would have to spam the fire button to play ! That would be uncomfortable. Plus I'm doing a trick with the laser sound where the sfx is looping (playing one sfx per laser caused glitches for some reasons) that would make single shot technically hard to do.
To explain a bit my reflexion about the fire: Initially the system was more complex with an energy gauge that was consumed by barrel rolling and firing and recovered slowly when not doing anything. So you had to pay attention for that. Finally I dropped it because I wanted a more immediate/arcade feel and I was desperatly looking for tokens to finish the game. The auto fire was here because you actually have no interest in stopping firing without the energy gauge and you can play the game with only one hand if you want. But I could let only the "manual fire" after all (if I ever need to find tokens for some future updates...)
I don't know why, but this is one of the coolest looking games I've ever seen.
This is amazing! I love the look and everything. Well done!
Ah, I am astonished, such a great piece! One of the best games I've played for PICO-8
O U T S T A N D I N G !
I don't know if you've seen Colony Wars for the PS1. If not, you should. Might give you some good ideas. To me, it was one of the best 3D shooters I ever saw, period. It came out for the PS1.
This is amazing! It's just like Star-Fox but in Pico-8! I have no idea how you textured the ship as well but it looks great
Easily one of my favorite games on this website, the 3D graphics kinda blow me away. As some others have said...Elite, possibly?
I'd love to play it but I get the following error when the cart is booting "attempt to perform arithmetic on a nil value"
Hey @RawTrak
Try it now -- I've fixed a bug in recent player update that was affecting Hyperspace.
