Saving Persistent Map Data

Hey PICO-8 folks! I'm working on a farming sim, and immediately hit a roadblock with persistent memory for web users. Here's the issue:

Because it's a farming sim, I need my map tiles to be changed by the player on the fly. This isn't a problem with mset(), but my issue arises when it comes time to save the map data. Saving a whole grid of map values and flags for grass/dirt/tilled dirt/vegetables/weeds/rocks requires a lot of different numbers to be saved. I understand that cstore() is an option, but that's only for cartridge players, not players on the web, if I understand correctly. And with only 64 memory slots with dget() and around 1024 map tiles to save (if I shrink the map significantly), if I translate the tiles to decimal or binary values, memory's still far too tight.

Is there any type of memory storage or trick that has allowed any of you to store large amounts of map data persistently for web users, or am I out of luck?

What would YOU do if you were a millionaire?

Meowlionaire knows what's up. This chubby cat is a modern-day Robin Hood, with pie-in-the-sky dreams of raiding a trove of gold, and redistributing the wealth to the feline working class. Rumors have been floating around about a billionaire's secret hoard, stashed up in the cloudtops. 1750 of those coins could feed the hungry for years, and if we're not kidding ourselves, nobody's gonna notice that they're gone. So Meowlionaire straps on a jetpack and launches into the clouds with a dream in her heart and a money sack in her paw. Equity for all, here we come!

Special Moves
[Jetpack] Grab a jetpack to fly sky-high!
[Roof walk] Bump your head on the ceiling to hang down from it. This should be handy for crossing tricky gaps!

Remember to check your map often. It'll show you how many coins remain in each quadrant, so you can scour each one as needed! The game ends once you've collected every last one of the game's 1750 coins. Good luck, Meowlionaire!

An Asteroids homage with a left twist.

What a situation! You're stuck in an asteroid field, but your ship will only turn to the left! Power down on the throttle, mash your lasers, and put your reflexes to the test!

Collect all 15 ships! Every ship has its own stats: speed, spin, acceleration, drag, and laser attributes. Remember, you need to use your newest ship if you want to unlock the next one!

Controls:
Z: Throttle
X: Laser

Coffee Bug loves coffee mugs! That's why the critter built a coffee shop in the forest, where creatures of all shapes and sizes can come to kick back, sip a hot cup a' joe, and relax. There's a field of genetically modified crops outside, growing coffee straight into the cup without the need for beans, roasting or brewing!

Harvest as much coffee as possible, for the love of the bean, and for the love of your patrons! But keep in mind, the sweet aroma of your rich blend has reached the nostrils of some hooligans!

Instructions:
Touch coffee mugs to pick them up! Take them to your cafe for points.
Throw coffee mugs with [Z]! Hit baddies to stun them!
Baddies can also be thrown into the shop, to be turned into paying customers. Basically, if you can grab it, toss it or knock it over, try throwing it into the cafe!

PICO-8 has built in ESDF controls, but they need to be accessed from inside btn() and btnp(), by calling btn(x,1) or btn(x,0), as if you're setting up separate inputs for separate players. But what if you want to use ESDF as an alternate control scheme for a single player, so the player can alternate between the arrow keys and ESDF, depending on their preference?

Insert bt() and btp() into your program, and call them instead of btn() and btnp(). This small change will allow players to use esdf controls, with minor edits to your code!

This cart outlines a fairly simple way in which diagonal vectors can be normalized, to avoid super-fast diagonal movement. On tab 0, you can check out the normalization code, and an example of where you should drop it in your code to make it work!

Feel free to use this function in your code, or to revise the math to make a more efficient system! The movement is a little jittery, so there's definitely room for improvement!

Also ... Vector the Skateboarding Duck might feature in future games. We'll see!

I'm starting a PICO-8 indexing project called PICO-ATE (www.pico-ate.com). It's a resource dump site for templates and tutorials that might be too niche or specific for our wiki or Github pages. Right now we've got a template for creating printable PICO-8 game manuals, as well as a game tutorial by @misato and a Newgrounds Medal tutorial by @Bigaston.

I'd love to host any tutorials, templates or weird one-offs that any of you might have! If anybody is interested, either dump your link in this thread, or hit me up on Twitter (@platformalist) and I'll review the content!

In probability theory, the birthday problem or birthday paradox concerns the probability that, in a set of n randomly chosen people, some pair of them will have the same birthday. By the pigeonhole principle, the probability reaches 100% when the number of people reaches 367 (since there are only 366 possible birthdays, including February 29). However, 99.9% probability is reached with just 70 people, and 50% probability with 23 people.

Not sure why The Birthday Problem blows my mind, but it got under my skin today, and I just HAD to make a visual representation of it. Press [Z] to generate a birthday for each of the 70 cakes. Each cake is assigned a value between 1 and 366 (1 for each day of the year). If there are two matching birthdays, their candles light up! If you want to see it represented numerically instead of visually, press [X]!
