Hey y'all. This is a little roguelike I've been working on for the zine; my article is about traps.

You are in a slimy cave. You can't see anything but you can feel the area around you. If you place your hand on a wall, you can extend your perception through the wall, but it will grow a slime to try and repel you. You can punch through the wall but don't. You will try to ingest the glowing green spores to open the door to the next level; doing so will also have Other Effects.

UPDATE: Worked a LOT on making slime generation less buggy and it finally works consistently. Added a title screen and improved the scramble effect when the player moves into a wall (it was so slow before!). Slimes attack player now and you can die.

UPDATE UPDATE: Now you can press button 1 after collecting a spore to create a burst of foam that surrounds you and works its way through nearby slimes. It's like a shield that you can use to see what is around you. Also, you can step immediately into a wall instead of taking another turn to do it (slimes were basically inescapable before without this). I also added exits and pools for the player to start in. I think I'm going to change them to generate in the middle of open space.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE: now there are doppelgangers and worms and vnoofis and you can win. When you die the game tells you what killed you. The game WILL CRASH if you allow it to create too many enemies or take too long to contain vnoofis. This should be fixed in v. 0.1.6 of PICO-8 because it is an OUT OF (LUA) MEMORY bug.

To do:

  • transition between levels
  • sound
  • better blood for killing enemies?

whoa, this is nuts. fantastic job. i love the glitchy pixels. not sure how to succeed at it yet, but i'm gonna be checking back to see how your work progresses.

oh thanks! there currently aren't any exits (they'll be green mouths), just eternal slime hell. will be a short game, maybe five levels.
